Alison Bergblom Johnson is a multi-disciplinary artist drawn to investigations of the meaning and experience of gender through cultural stereotypes. Her work reflects and pushes at the margins of a limited vocabulary of what a woman or man is. In her work, male or female figures are isolated and stripped of context. Commercial photography is the primary source of her silhouettes, which are cut into multiple found and marbled papers. Her work explores authenticity, cultural expectations, and de/valuation. She also further engages these ideas through creative nonfiction, performance, and installation. In addition, she is an experienced teaching artist.
