Angel Bomb is a award-winning letterpress and design studio of me, Todd Thyberg. I began letterpress printing commercially and have broadened into printmaking and book arts.

One goal of my work has been to engage the reader in an ergodic experience; that is, encourage the reader to do more than simply read and instead engage and interact with the book before them. Exploration of the written word and of the book format is something that fascinates me and I seek to push this development further. I’ve used various methods of engagement from producing QR codes within a letterpress-printed graphic novel which takes readers to interactive online elements that deepen the story, to the process of aging and weathering papers which gives the reader the sense of delving through history. This process gives the feeling of being transported to a bygone era and transcends time through the visual and aural experiences of crinkling paper that is brittle, marked, and stained. Mister F, a mini-book, was developed to vend through a repurposed vintage cigarette machine.

Commission work is accepted as well including business cards, wedding invitations, and more.

Book – The Airship

The Airship is a science fiction story and first in a trilogy of planned letterpress graphic novels. Within it’s three-color letterpress pages lies a literary analogy between the dichotomy of using modern day digital design tools to create works that are produced on vintage analog equipment. In this story, set in a fictional past, one of the characters is transported to another dimension in space and time. His attempts to communicate across this gulf are indecipherable without access to a smartphone. The reader must also bridge the gap from the era of the story and the equipment used to produce it by scanning QR codes in order to fully experience the book. Through digital enhancement, the story continues with video and interactivity on the viewers smartphone. The story explores a government becoming a military industrial complex which has echoes of past and current trends in this country.

Book – The Miskatonic Papers

The Miskatonic Papers, my most ambitious work to date, is an experiential book limited to 125 signed and numbered copies. You don’t just open the book and read it; you explore and experience the mystery, assembling it from numerous artifacts that have been hidden from view for decades. It’s like breaking open a time capsule and trying to figure out what happened to this expedition over one hundred years ago. The book is an ode to H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu mythos which inspired me so much as a kid and made me want to be a writer.

Composed of 54 printed pieces, including letters, telegrams, drawings, newspaper clippings, a broadside, burned tatters of found stationery, and a journal that was written by hand. All of these – letterpress printed, hand stamped, aged and weathered – comprise this Stygian work of unnameable horrors. Clothbound in a clamshell box, this book also comes with a hand-cast resin piece of the artifact that is central to the story.
