Hi! Welcome to my online studio for AAW! I’m a professional self-employed visual artist from St. Paul, MN, specializing in acrylic paintings, mixed media work, illustration, and religious textiles (custom work available). I’m also a long time NEMAA member, having previously shown for many years in the Casket Arts Building’s main floor hallway near the huge scale. Working from my home and church studios (where I’m Immanuel Lutheran Church’s artist-in-residence), I was going to be a guest artist at the Grain Belt Bottling House for this year’s 25th anniversary AAW.
This new series is entitled “Growing against Gravity”. These abstract DirtScape paintings depict plant life and root systems. The paintings show plant cross sections with their root systems and surrounding environments.
Plant roots, erupting from seeds, know to grow downward due to the earth’s gravitational pull. The plant’s remaining growth is all accomplished against gravity. We, too, put down “roots” in various places and stages with our growing bodies from birth onwards. Everything we do in life is against gravity, whether it is physical, spiritual, intellectual, emotional, creative, or social growth.
We are part of the earth – both as observational scientists and as a living species. Viewing the paintings for any length of time also gives the added sensation that you are in the dirt, included as a fellow plant.
I use brightly colored acrylic paints, volcano ash, rocks, and gel mediums to show Life’s vibrant energy and possible health when Nature’s elements are in place. My process is like creating giant coloring book pages and that alone makes me feel happy and curious as a child as I paint.
