Danse Macabre, Linocut Print, 2019
Online
The phrase, “cogito ergo sum” is Latin for “I think, therefore I am”. As a radical skeptic, I know that I may doubt everything–who I am, what I am, why I am–but, as long as I am making art, the one thing that is indisputable is THAT I am. My preferred mediums are linoleum relief printing, rubber stamping, and painting. My goal is to make art relevant, functional, and accessible. I believe that art is about expression and exchange–my hope is that you enjoy my art, but also see the world just a little differently because of it.
Though some use the world around them as inspiration for their art, I am most inspired by the inner world of the mind. My art explores the big forces of the universe–life, death, growth, decay, time, fear, humanity. I seek to give expression to the things that frighten us and the things that give us hope. My art is influenced by classical philosophy, Russian literature, arthouse horror films, and 90s emo music.

There is one simple fact that makes all humans equal – death. From the poor to the priestly, the jester to the king, no amount of wealth or power can alter the fact that death eventually comes for every one of us. In remembrance of this great equalizer, the corpses of the dead – from all classes of society – rise from their graves on All Hallows’ Eve for one more night of revelry. The Danse Macabre, or Dance of the Dead, is a reminder to celebrate life while we have it, for one day we will have nothing but our solitary, eternal crypts.

It takes a kind of Sisyphusian effort to survive winter year after year. Inevitably we end up feeling like we’ve expired alone on top of a frigid and barren plateau. But the harsh winter is what makes spring so good.

It was believed that on Samhain the veil that protected the world of the living from the spirits of the departed dissolved, allowing those spirits to roam the earth to visit their loved ones or seek vengeance on their enemies. Samhain was a time when people would gather in public spaces to feast and tell stories. Large bonfires were lit to help draw spirits to earth. Candles lit from the bonfire lined the roads and sidewalks to guide the souls of the departed back to their earthly homes.

The wytch displays a unique inner feminine strength. Due to her fierce individuality, she is often the subject of persecution. During the Reformation era, a strain of paranoia and fear of the supernatural swept through the Catholic Church. Those who fell outside the strict behavioral norms of the time were liable to be alienated or worse. Rather than church doctrine, witches often derive their spirituality from a connection to nature, communing directly with their animal familiars, divining possible futures through astrology, and mixing potent elixirs with nature’s bountiful herbs. Their unusual ways were mistaken for black magic and devil worship, making them the target of blame for any misfortune that befell a village or farm. This paranoia resulted in thousands of wytches being burned at the stake in Europe, while in America 19 watches were hanged to death in Salem, Massachusetts in 1693. These episodes of history reveal that the cruelty actually existed within the supposed godly folk rather than any devil worshippers.
