Jo Ann Hendricks
I thank my lucky stars that I attended the University of Iowa and encountered instructors in art, religion, and even Rhetoric with microscopic questions aimed in and telescopic lessons aimed out. Here I found doors to the universe of perception and creative possibility that creaked and even sometimes crashed open. With fits and starts and varying degrees of intensity since that four-year brief launching, I have been on a sine wave of an artist’s life.
In my senior year of college, I stepped into the commitment of marriage and after four years even enthusiastically added child-raising to my daily routine. There were people I loved and who became vital to my personal wellbeing. I was surrounded in my home state of lush black fertile earth, long highways, and small towns. The row upon row of July corn silk tassels only served to draw my eye to the horizon line where the vastness of the evening ebony offered a place for pleasurable visual and emotional connection. The crazy university art thinkers that had dissipated into a fade on the eastern horizon were replaced by small specialized groups of art school expatriates, area artists, art organization staff, area museum staff, visiting lecturers, and a variety of art enthusiasts. Together we created bases of operation and enactment: organizing drawing groups, visiting and exhibiting in galleries, taking and instructing classes, creating projects, attending conferences, leading art organizations, and building art businesses.
My art work subject was occasionally landscapes but by far the subjects now center on people: friends, family, or people in settings such as bodies of water, airports or restaurants. Moving or stationary. It would be the contrasts, forms, or composition that would catch my attention. Drawings from a weekly life drawing co operative produce a large collection of nudes. The emphasis is on line, manipulation of proportion, and volume. Recently, I have added color to selected drawings and now call it the Blue Nude collection.
