My work as an artist explores the voices of curios and collectibles, the lost artifact, or forgotten story, the consumable good or souvenir, each with their own history and use, each with their own significance and association, yet each imbued with the potential to say more. My work seeks to carry the multiplicity of references and indications of their original voice, their affective promise and disclosure and to develop a grammar of objects; to gather the fragments and fractures, the disruptions and denials of our world; the glimmering hope, resilience and renewal, and to discover the threads that bind local to global, personal to universal, to narrate my small piece of truth and weave it into this map of our making.

While much of my work is object-based in its inception and seeks to discover new ways to speak beyond the original voice of the object, it also endeavors to reach into the affective modes of perception, and how our interactions are not simply cognitive and cerebral, but also deeply rooted in our emotive and physiological selves. Frequently this calls for the creation of larger scale installations in order to charge the work with a multiplicity of evocative possibilities, to move the work from the call of the singular or the messy chatter of the many into the realm of a developing language of historical, spatial and temporal intersections.

Nose Vase-Planter I

“My nose is Gargantuan! You little Pig-snout, you tiny Monkey-Nostrils, you virtually invisible Pekinese-Puss, don’t you realize that a nose like mine is both scepter and orb, a monument to my superiority? A great nose is the banner of a great man, a generous heart, a towering spirit, an expansive soul–such as I unmistakably am, and such as you dare not to dream of being, with your bilious weasel’s eyes and no nose to keep them apart! With your face as lacking in all distinction–as lacking, I say, in interest, as lacking in pride, in imagination, in honesty, in lyricism–in a word, as lacking in nose as that other offensively bland expanse at the opposite end of your cringing spine–which I now remove from my sight by stringent application of my boot!”
― Edmond Rostand, Cyrano de Bergerac

  • Approximately 6” x 8” x 9”
  • These vases or planters are for inside plants and don’t have a drain hole a.k.a “pee-hole” 🙂
  • Handmade with stoneware clay & stained with iron oxide (twice fired)
  • Ships within 1 week (United States) 2-3 weeks (Worldwide)

These noses are handmade without the use of plaster molds and each nose will end up with it’s own unique character. With that in mind, please embrace these as handmade and full with delightful unpredictabilities and subtle expressive variations.

Wearable Art

House Charm – Pendant

These House Charms are based on an ancient non-clay ceramic process dating back around 5500 years. Known as Kharmohreh in Iran, Egyptian paste or Egyptian faience is considered as one of the first synthetic materials. In Mesopotamian cultures this method was originally used to make beads and small amulets. The beads were thought to ward off evil spirits and were seen as good luck charms or protectors. Unlike most glazed ceramic objects, these are self-glazing due to their mineral composition, and there is an alchemical magic that unfolds in the kiln giving the charms exquisite shades of blue. My House Charms have the sense of an ancient artifact, rich with meaning and history, and are intended to act as keeper of the house, protector, talisman, or simply to give one the love and warmth of home.

– Handmade with Kharmohreh paste
– Approx. 1″ x 1 1/2″ x 3/8″

These pendant are handmade with unpredictable Kharmohreh (Egyptian paste) and may come with some inconsistencies so yours will be a unique piece and may not look exactly like the photo.

Blue Girl Charm- Pendant

In electrical and mechanical trades and manufacturing, each half of a pair of mating connectors or fasteners is conventionally assigned gendered designation of male or female. A power cord on an appliance terminates in a male plug. In this work, an impression of a male plug on Kharmohreh creates a female icon for the pendant.

Bozi – Pendant

Why don’t you smile Bozi? is an ongoing sculptural series that I started in 2013. The series is inspired by the stylized design of a Persian ibex borrowed from a six thousand year old Iranian ceramic beaker. In the Persian language “bozi” means little goat, and the title of the work refers to a humorous folk song that was meant to spread holiday cheer and put a momentary smile on frozen faces of people. Using the same fascinating and ancient metal casting techniques to create my larger sculptural works, I made a limited edition of wearable Bozi sculptures.

The first edition of Bozi is a limited edition of ten cast silicon bronze pendants. Each piece is made out of a microcrystalline wax model and then molded and poured in molten metal. Each pendant is individually hand polished and rubbed down to achieve a sheen patina. This cast bronze pendant has a crude and ancient quality to it that combines the unpolished nature of ancient arts with sleek modern aesthetics.

– Semi-smooth texture
– Dimensions: 2 1/2 x 1 x 1/4 in (6.5 x 2.5 x 0.5 cm)
– Weighs: 1.3 oz (35 g)

Decorative Art

Nightingale & Rose Souvenirs – Golden Bird

In literature and the decorative arts, the Nightingale and Rose is a metaphor for the beloved and lover par excellence; the rose is beautiful, proud, and often cruel, while the bird sings endlessly of his longing and devotion. The Nightingale and the Rose series brings the ancient panegyric of the Nightingale and Rose (Gol-o-Bolbol) to the contemporary setting, addressing the dynamics of food, economy and human relationships in our evermore-globalized world. This work appropriates the Persian concept of the nightingale, and gives it a new form in the chicken, the common bird, the everyman. It is a particular Persian cultural reference, translated into a more general, or widely understood image, in order to broaden the manifold possibilities of association and interpretation, to seek nodes of connectivity, open fissures and places in between. This series contemplates the role of power structure in interpersonal relationships as well as international relations; where the asymmetrical relationship of bird and flower echoes from individual level to family, state, national and international political systems.

Aftabeh & Bozi – Wall Decor Linocut Prints

What happens when you ask Bozi and Aftabeh to have a conversation with one another?

I use Aftabeh in my works as a tongue-in-cheek symbol of Iranian identity. The poetry line on the Aftabeh print is borrowed from a folk song from the Northern province of Gilan that reads, “Aftebeh, pitcher of water is heavy [to lift],” and speaks to how the small task of  carrying a jug of water weighs too much while bearing the sadness of lost love.

Bozi is inspired by the stylized design of a Persian ibex borrowed from a six thousand year old Iranian ceramic beaker, now housed in the Louvre.  The text on the Bozi print refers to another humorous Nowruz folk song that is meant to spread holiday cheer and bring a smile to your face in the middle of winter. The line reads, “Why don’t you smile Bozi?

  • These prints are hand-made limited edition of 6 linocut relief press prints with etching ink.
  • Note that these are not digital prints and each work is slightly different from the other.
  • 8″ x 10″ prints are matted with 11″ x 14″ white core bevel cut mats and are ready for framing.
