ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a mixed media sculptor who combines a diversity of imagery into sculptural hybrids that explore cultural contexts between people.

I use vintage toy and ‘folk art’ aesthetics to explore the passing down of cultural values between generations. I make artwork that tantalizes the eye and invites the audience to linger and look deeper at the work and reflect on what we believe about ourselves.

Camp Series # 6

This series explores the relationship between recreational camping common in Minnesota and the homeless ‘camps’ in local parks throughout the Twin Cities. I find the odd arrangement of brilliant colored tents at odds with the dire situations of people who have lost their jobs and homes due to the COVID 19 pandemic and our current economic situation. I see echoes of ‘Hoovervilles’ from the Great Depression – but with a modern spin.

These works have been ‘erased/rubbed out’ much like how our society has treated the inhabitants of these camps.
