Rita Schaefer-Seaton

Creating is an expression of both freedom and discipline to me. As a painter, I work primarily with water-based media on canvas and there exists an almost constant challenge to balance the freedom of expressing my ideas with the discipline that the limitations of paint and canvas demand.

When painting, I begin the process with either a concrete concept in mind or I let intuition guide my initial paint application. With both approaches I eventually come to a point in my process where I either need to let freedom of intuition reign or apply the required discipline to come to a resolution in the painting.

The abstract nature of my paintings and the versatility of water-based media support my creative process of balancing freedom and discipline.
