Tracy Frizzell grew up on the banks of Steamboat Lake, near the town of Walker, in northern Minnesota. It was this proximity that instilled in her a love of all things “water”. Swimming, boating, fishing: water was everywhere and it was always changing. She was fascinated with trying to make sense of the seeming chaos of waves and reflections and see them for the patterns that existed underneath. Attempting to capturing the fickle nature of water in her paintings became her most frustrating, and in turn, rewarding endeavor. Painting mostly in oils and watercolors, she utilizes a style that adds action to her paintings. With color and brushstrokes she takes what might have been a stagnant scene and adds an element of imagination and emotion to it.

Tracy grew up in a family of artists and has fond memories of piling into her grandparents Ford Econoline van and going on family sketching excursions. “Generally, we would set out on back country, low maintenance roads and look for the unexpected gem of a vista to stop at and sketch. I can remember one particular excursion where we went walking in the woods to look for tree fungus that we then took back to the cabin to paint landscape scenes onto.” Since moving to Minneapolis, her work has been expanding to include less rural landscapes. Different elements of the urban industrial history of Minneapolis and St. Paul have captured her imagination. She’s experimented with incorporating elements of storytelling and whimsy in recent works, as well as different paint application techniques, and distortion of tradition viewing perspectives.

When she is not in her studio in the Northrup King Building, located in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District, she can be found kayaking, biking, and traveling—always looking for that magical spot that would make a great painting!
