California Building

Welcome to the California Building, one of the first studio buildings in NE Minneapolis. The building has a long commitment to the arts, community and arts sustainability in Northeast Minneapolis.

Building owners, John Kremer and Jennifer Young purchased the property in 1991 and have rented studios to artists ever since. With over 80 artists as tenants, the building is an anchor in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District.

While we do not require masks, we do encourage them!

California Building is open Art-A-Whirl weekend on Friday, Saturday & Sunday.

Beaded Ring Class

Learn how to use beaded peyote stitch to make a perfectly sized beaded ring. This class is taught by Erin Peña and is open to anyone who feels comfortable working with small beads. Participants may draw their own pattern or use one of the available pre-made patterns.

Materials will be provided with admission, with the option to purchase extra. No pre-registration necessary, class is a drop-in format

CNC Machine Demo

Learn the basics of how we use a CNC machine (Computerized Numeric Control Machine) to cut out furniture legs and decor pieces, from the initial design process, to the “tool pathing” steps, to the final automated cuts. Watch our robotic employee cut out one of our sculptural pieces!

Cutting Board Class

Learn the process of creating a cutting board in this hands-on class. From wood milling to the final finishing – you’ll get a demonstration of all the steps, and then get the chance to design & create your very own 12” x 9” board! (boards will be ready for pickup 1-2 weeks after the class). In addition, we’ll provide you with a drink to enjoy during the class. Options will be IPA, Stout, Hard Cider or Sparkling Water.

Rope Art Emotions Painting

Feeling happy, sad, peaceful, or maybe mad?

What would your emotion look like if it was a simple piece of rope? In this playful and clever 30 minute workshop, you will create your very own rope art Emotions painting! Each student receives, from a choice of 3 colors, a pre-painted 8 x 8“ canvas board to add design/patter/color to, and then sculpts their unique rope emotion onto the canvas board.

Experience this creative and fun way to think about our emotions in a whole new light, open up conversations with our children about feelings, or just enjoy creating with a friend or date!

Travel Sketching with Patricia Canney

My travel sketches have been the best way of capturing a sense of place for me over the years. My oldest sketches go back 50 years when I was in the Peace Corps in West Africa and have included Paris, south of France and my local neighborhood!

Whether you want to save memories from a trip, a day at the lake, the perfect flower or cappuccino…a unique drawing is perfect! I will have my all sketchbooks, tools and art supplies ready the first hour of each day during Art-A-Whirl® so stop by Studio 406 in the California Building and explore.
